Drink up thee cider! Old Mout Berries and Cherries Vs Koppaberg Mixed Fruit. Who doesn’t love a lunch time drink? And what better way than with slabs of bread and cheese. Old Mout to begin. I do like this but there is a problem - I could drink litres of it! To me, it doesn’t taste like cider, but then it wouldn’t. It doesn’t have alcohol in it. It’s so very drinkable, the most notable thing I could taste was blackberry. It’s a very vivid pink colour and as with all cider, the colder the better. The bottle says “I’m grown up” but the drink says otherwise. Koppaberg was nearer to cider in taste in that although still sweet, it has a dry after taste. The colour was much paler and reflected the difference in sweetness. I couldn’t distinguish the berries as with the Old Mout but it was light and refreshing, perfect for this surprise spell of sunny weather. Koppaberg bottles always feel a bit somber to me. If you have something so light and lovely inside then why not show it. On balance the Koppaberg was better to pair with with cheese. But hey, I am a trooper so the drinks have been drunk and with the help of my assistant, Reggie dog, the cheese has gone too. A great way to spend my time. @kopparberguk @oldmoutcideruk @pilgrimschoice #alcoholfreecider #soberlife #sober #sundaydrinks #alcoholfree #soberaf #alcoholfreeliving #soberinspiredpirates #borderterriersofinstagram #cheese
Thatchers Zero. Cider was never my drink of choice unless it was a very hot day and the cider was very cold. There is certainly nothing wrong with it and from research I know it was at least two years in development. It is a good looking golden colour and it does indeed smell like cider but I guess that’s because cider smells of apples and this is the appliest (new word?) of drinks I’ve tasted so far. Just like with grapes I don’t know my apples aside from green or red and sweet or sharp. It was dry going in my mouth and sweet at the back of the throat. It didn’t taste exactly like cider but I’ve a feeling it’s much easier to mimic than wine. My recollection is that cider was far too easy to drink, because I couldn’t taste the alcohol. It was like apple pop, which was not helpful to a drinker like me. This too, is like apple pop, and I did like it but at over £2.00 a bottle, it won’t be for me. If you are a cider drinker I’d love to know your thoughts? Reggie is just bored of his celebrity now so can’t even be bothered to look at the camera. @thatcherscider #alcoholfreecider #alcoholfreedrinks #sobercurious #soberlife #instasober #alcoholfreeliving #boozefree #soberoctober #soberinspiredpirates #ciderreview #thatcherszero #drinkuptheecider #borderterriersofinstagram
Sheppy’s Low Alcohol Cider 0.5% ABV. Cider has come such a long way. I vaguely remember the days of my mum and dad drinking GL and Woodpecker in bottles you could return in exchange for 10p (I think that was it). Then when I started drinking (just before the birth of alcopops) I remember Diamond White and Diamond Blush, oh so classy. Since then, Cider has found its proper place at the bar and has become a marketeer’s dream. Sheppy’s is a Somerset, family owned cider. I quite like the bottle. It looks grown up and mature. It has a nice light colour that does, in part, reflect the drink itself. It is quite sweet but not too much and retains a cider taste despite the lack of alcohol. Although its beautifully clear, it does have something of scrumpy about it, but that is perfectly okay with me. It is quite a delight to have something with an unashamed strength of taste and like so many other good alcohol free alternatives, this has not been thrown together as an afterthought or on a whim. Well done Sheppy’s, a good quality, applelicious (yes, i know it’s a ridiculous made up word) fine tasting cider. @sheppyscider #lowalcohol #lowalcoholcider #lowandnoalcohol #sobercurious #cidercurious #sobermilestones #soberfamily #sobertribe #soberselfcare #trydry #noalcoholneeded #sheppyslowalcohol #sheppyscider #ciderreview #soberistas #soberbrotherhood #sobersisterhood #boozefree #lovesoberlife #nohangover #recoveryispossible #getsober #soberrunner #soberrunning #soberrevolution #drinkuptheecider #freefromalcohol
Pulp Apple Craft Cider (0.5% ABV) Well, it did smell like cider. It did look like cider and it kind of tasted like it wanted to be cider but it just didn’t cut it. I wasn’t enamoured with the bottle, not a fan of too much blue. The tag line “All Pulp and No Fiction” made me cringe a little bit (really, don’t do that). However, the aroma was very appetising, strong in apples and authentic cider smelling. It was a beautiful golden colour with bubbles that excitedly skipped to the surface one after another. I was so surprised when I actually drank it though as none of this translated into the taste. The promise of those lovely bubbles turned out to be a rather flat affair. My mouth struggled to identify them properly as the fizz was too weak. The drink itself was a bit watery and had a synthetic feel that I was not expecting. I expected sweetness and to that end I would say that element was good as it did not overwhelm the apples. It’s a shame as there are still far fewer ciders to try than beers and I want all of them to be good as I appreciate the time and effort put into their production. Sadly, like life though, there are always a few bad apples.

Koppaberg with Strawberry and Lime Alcohol Free. I am yet to come across the word “yuck” in the glossary of terms for the drink reviewer’s fraternity but frankly it is the only word I can think of to describe this drink. As soon as I opened the can, I could smell the sickly-sweet smell of artificial strawberry. The pour is red as one would expect, and the fizz is pretty constant in the glass. I could not in any way shape or form identify this drink as cider. I felt like my teeth and gums were dissolving as I drank it – like I had eaten all the sweets, all at once. The syrupy feel is not a pleasant feeling in my mouth with an aftertaste of yes, you guessed it, more sugar than I could shake a stick at. There are so few good ciders out there and with Koppaberg having such a high proportion of the fruit cider market I had hoped they might do better. All of the synonyms of sweet is what we have here with a massive sprinkling of candied candy on top. I need to clean my teeth before they fall out! There are much better AF ciders to drink that this (unless, of course, you are exceptionally fond of sugar!)

Briska Päroncider 0.5% ABV That’s Pear cider to you and me. This Swedish beauty is beyond compear (see what I did there?) I like the look of this bottle. I like clear glass so I can see what I am getting. There is something about the name and the label that made me think of colder climates and snow days. The aroma of this is overwhelmingly pear. I have no idea why I should be so surprised by the strength of smell, but I was. Aside from the pear one can almost taste the sweetness through the inhale. The carbonation is so low that it almost tastes like it is on the very edge of going flat. Without the fizz kick to distract there is no hiding from that sweetness. It’s a shame, the pear flavours coat the mouth but then so does the sweetness. The end of the drink is good. The pear remains and triumphs as the dominant flavour and it stays long after the swallow, I am almost inclined to say this is too sweet but on this very rare occasion I can allow it as I am such a lover of pear-based drinks. While I am a fan, please do be mindful that this is not cider, well not as I know it anyway. I have a feeling it will be far too sweet for many of you.

Champions Raspberry Cider with Vitamins (0.5% ABV) This is just the pep up I need in a cold, dull Lockdown January. Not only is it only 50 calories but it also has 20mg of vitamin C (NHS tells me we need 40mg per day) I love the large bottle with its raspberry red contents singing to me from the fridge. It smells fabulous, fruity and fresh. The label is simple, but I like the gold, and it has all the information you need right there, clearly stating the alcohol content. This is important for us sober sippers and it is surprising how difficult this information is on some labels. The taste matches up to the aroma. As with all ciders it is sweet (but it has no added sugar so all natural) but that is fleeting as it then becomes dry and the full whack of raspberry is revealed to the palate. There are no high and low notes to this, it is just a very quaffable, light and refreshing drink The carbonation serves its purpose, the bubbles are tight and small but stay the course. If you like your cider fruity then give this go. Unlike most ciders I won’t be waiting until the summer months to drink it again. It is definitely my champion so far. @championscider #championscider #afcider #alcoholfreecider #lowalcoholcider #afdrinks #alcoholfreedrinks #sobersips #sobersipper #sobersuggestions #dryjanuary #givingupdrinking #nonalcoholiccider #odaat #soberrunners #soberprofessionals #sobermillenials #sobermilestones #soberandhappy #soberandhealthy #soberselfcare #sobersuggestions #alcoholalternative #drinkuptheecider #soberlockdown #soberjourney #soberwarriors #sobercommunity #stayingsoberthroughcorona #staysober #raspberrycider #besoberminded
